Lean Design Planning
CRGA prioritizes lean principles in design because we understand the need to maximize efficiency and eliminate waste in today's healthcare environments. With three Lean Six Sigma Certified Black Belts on staff, we utilize lean design strategies to help our clients define and measure success. We map their value stream, create flow, establish pull, eliminate waste and maximize their resources—all in the pursuit of perfection as we look to create the most pleasant patient experience and positive health outcomes.
An essential component to creating a successful lean project is engaging management and key stakeholders in the design process. We hold 3P Kaizen workshops with our clients to allow them to place a direct hand in the early stages of development and pinpoint their biggest priorities to improve the space. Typically, these workshops span from three to five days and are transformational in realizing the true potential of the project. The multi-disciplinary workshop team combines the perspectives and needs of all individuals impacted by the design of the facility to find the best health care solutions for patients, providers and any ancillary support systems.
Our team has had the opportunity to workshop several projects with our clients to determine the best solutions for their overall needs. We kick-start this journey by participating in a visioning session that highlights their long-term goals and sets the tone for the rest of the project.
Along the way, we educate our clients on lean design practices and how a lean approach contributes to creating an exceptional final product. We engage the participants in a series of exercises to help them gain a deeper understanding of the lean approach and to begin imagining what the ideal patient experience could be. These exercises conceive a space for bonding, improve communication and provide a collaboration opportunity that establishes cohesion amongst the group that will carry over into the practice long after the new facility is constructed.
Then, with a better understanding of the fundamentals of the lean process, we identify key areas of waste or inefficiency by “going to Gemba”—in other words, analyzing the current state and operational efficiency of their space. We review current metrics and break down the day-to-day traffic flow of patients, clinicians and administrators within their facility through interactive diagramming activities.
After completing these exercises, we take the team on a “deep dive” into the patient care experience. Now that we know what the patient experience looks like in the present, we can look towards the future by imagining processes that support the ideal vision for patients, families, staff and providers. Utilizing our knowledge of problem areas and maintaining our focus on the key drivers for the project, we set forth in executing our guiding design principles.
This thought process flows smoothly into early schematic design—our hands-on approach results in enthusiastic buy-in from many stakeholders allowing us to expedite the project schedule.
Lean Design cultivates continuous process improvement. The 3P workshop allows individuals to bring their ideas to the round table to create a shared vision and establish tactics for monitoring improvement going forward. Participation in the lean process improvement workshop gives project stake holders a sense of ownership of the project outcome and fosters a drive for continuous improvement in the future.
