About the Project

The Greater Baltimore Medical Center Orthopaedic Specialists of Maryland Suite, designed by CRGA, received the 2019 Excellence in Construction Award. This project, located in one of the several medical office buildings on GBMC's campus, included exam rooms, office spaces, a waiting area and two imaging rooms with a shared reading room, where new X-Ray equipment was installed. Engaging key stake holders and end users was pivotal to the overwhelming success of this project. Prior to being commissioned for the design, representatives from CRGA and GBMC came together in a Lean 3P workshop to assess their current operational model and create a vision for the future that would then fuel design decisions moving forward. The result was an on-stage/off-stage medical home model where all services, aside from imaging came to the patients.  This way, all clinical staff and functions occur off stage, allowing for a more efficient workflow and overall better patient experience.  The exam rooms were universally sized to address the various orthopaedic modalities, optimizing room utilization and patient thru-put.  The two X-ray rooms included one central shared reading area. This feature allowed for one tech to work between two rooms, thus eliminating downtime in the flow of patients, where approximately 75% of all patients receive an X-ray as a part of their standards of care and diagnosis.  The practice continues to measure key metrics on a day-to-day basis to allow for continued process improvement.
