About the Project
The Pediatric Behavioral Health Suite at the University of Maryland Medical Center is a newly renovated space within the Emergency Department, designed by CRGA Design. The 1,280 square foot suite was transformed to cater to the behavioral health needs of pediatric patients, ranging from early childhood to late teenage years. This renovation includes four patient observation rooms for secure and comfortable monitoring, a group therapy room for interactive sessions, a toilet room for patient convenience, a strategically positioned nurse/security office for efficient oversight, a sally port to control access, and a shared corridor connecting all functional areas.
A key focus of the renovation was ensuring safety and security for both patients and staff. CRGA collaborated closely with UMMC's clinical and facilities teams to address specific safety requirements. This collaboration influenced hardware selections, construction details, and visual accessibility to minimize risks and enhance secure functionality.
In addition to safety, creating a welcoming environment was a priority. The suite features graphic images, patterns, textured accents, and bold yet thoughtful colors to make the space feel cheerful and inviting. A writable wall surface in the group therapy room allows patients to express their creativity through drawing and writing, adding a therapeutic dimension to the space.
The renovated suite blends stringent safety measures with a nurturing atmosphere, supporting the emotional and psychological well-being of patients. This project highlights the successful collaboration between CRGA and UMMC, demonstrating how considerate design can enhance both safety and the patient experience in a healthcare setting.
